Mental Wellbeing
Service
As a club, we volunteered with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to help set up and clean up for the Atlanta Out of the Darkness Walk in Piedmont Park. Learn more about the GA Chapter of AFSP here: https://afsp.org/chapter/georgia
Neuroscience
To educate ourselves on the neuroscientific perspective of mental wellbeing, we read papers reviewing the underlying circuitry of subjective wellbeing and its various components, including sleep. We discussed the roles that different types of research (translational vs. basic, human vs. animal model) can serve in questions of mental well-being, and dove into the various recommendations made by research, including sleep, physical activity, and meditation.
Policy
In tandem with our volunteer work for the AFSP Out of the Darkness walk, we also organized a team of undergraduate and graduate students from the Neuroscience Institute to walk and raise money for AFSP, raising over $1500. Additionally, we promoted mental well-being resources and education within Georgia State’s Neuroscience Institute by creating graphics about educational resources for student well-being and hosting a Talk Saves Lives seminar on suicide prevention by AFSP.
