Neuroscience

SNP dove into the topics of criminal justice reform, juvenile justice and impacts on mental health, and case studies on the impact of utilizing neuroscience in the criminal justice system. See below for resources discussed in these meetings, which were used to prepare for our guest speaker event

Service

SNP believes in the power of education and access to materials, so we organized a book drive for the Georgia Department of Corrections Library Donation Program. Many studies have proven that inmates who use the library more have an increasingly higher literacy rate than those who do not use the library at all. Thus, we reached out to our academic network to gather books to donate to this Library.

Policy/Advocacy

SNP members attended and volunteered at the yearly Motherhood Beyond Bars Spring Luncheon. 80% of incarcerated women are mothers. The number of incarcerated women has skyrocketed over the past four decades, with devastating effects on children and families. 200,000 Georgia children are separated from their mothers due to parental incarceration. These children face increased risks, including social, emotional, and behavioral disorders, substance abuse, cognitive delays, and academic challenges. Every child born to a woman in prison is born with the deck stacked against them. Motherhood Beyond Bars works to reverse the odds.
